My Minnetonka Story: Rach Gent

Rach Gent in her Minnetonka 3-Layer Fringe Boots!

My Minnetonka Story: Rach Gent, blogger behind So, hi.

What was your first pair of Minnetonka moccasins?
I remember when I was a little girl, maybe about 5 or so, I would just stare at my mother’s Minnetonkas with some sort of crazy infatuation. So my love for Minnetonka’s started at an extremely young age. My first pair were actually a pair that my mother had purchased for me, they were the classic Thunderbirds and they were beautiful. I was probably about 9 years old when I had gotten them and I fell in love. They were so classically cute and they went along with every outfit a spunky, adventurous 9 year old girl could come up with.

What is your favorite memory involving your Minnetonkas?
One of my favorite memories involving my Minnetonka’s are all of the wonderful comments I receive while wearing them! I swear, when I wear my 3-layered fringe boots I get stopped at least 5 times every time I go to the grocery store! Who knew I was so stylish?

How far have you and your Minnetonka’s traveled?
The furthest my Minnetonkas have traveled is the Windy City, Chicago. I think the best Minnetonka fans actually live there! So much Minnetonka support!

Describe your Minnetonka style.
My Minnetonka style is very versatile, because Minnetonka shoes are versatile. I can wear my fringe boots with a floral dress and belt to go for a flirty, bohemian feel or I could wear my beaded mocs with a pair of cropped jeans and a sparkly oversized tee for a glam feel. I guess I would describe my Minnetonka style as “Boho Glam”.

What’s your Minnetonka story?
Inga:
My grandma, Vivian, was a Minnetonka Moccasin queen! She wore them all the time. It is one of my strongest memories of her. She wore the tan ankle boot with the fringe at the ankle that zipped up the back. All the time! She wore them in the morning (in her robe), and to go out to run errands. I loved them! Actually I bought a pair a few years ago just because of the sentimental value and understand her style choice even more.

Tell us how The Parlour Suite came to be?
Joel:
I have been in some sort of band or music endeavor since maybe being a preteen. Inga would play piano and sing at home all the time. One of the first things I was baffled by when I met Inga (pre-couple) was her behemoth power singing. I showed her some Mamas and Papas songs, Leslie Gore, Etta James, and it kind of started there.

How would you describe your sound?
Joel:
Inspirations taken from Elmore James, Dick Dale, Bo Diddley… for percussive rhythmic leads on guitar. With that in mind to push and pull with the organ.

Inga:
The tonality of our writing draws off of surfy, vintage inspirations. I tend towards pop music, new and old. Droning analog organ tones and gritty fender strat accompanied by driving drums are our instrumental foundation. For this last album Joel and I focused on creating a musical composition that we would be excited to play live, something we could feel. Energy.

What inspired the song The Goldenhand?
Inga:
Around the time I wrote The Goldenhand, I was listening to an oversaturation of numerous girl groups: The Ronettes, Leslie Gore, and Dusty Springfield were on heavy rotation. I loved that they could say something so powerful and yet fairly vague at the same time. I liked the idea, that writing a song in this way, could be interpreted differently to the listeners living in various situations.

What’s been your most memorable performance so far?
Inga:
We just got back from our West coast CD release tour. Wow! That was completely packed with some favorite performances.
We recorded a session at Lost Ark Studio in San Diego. Even though it wasn’t for a live audience, the performance was a really special experience. It was the first time the 3 of us had been in the studio together. It was such a cool experience to play live together and record the session in such a sweet studio, right on the beach in La Jolla.

Joshua:
Bootleg Theater, LA with Sweethearts. Perfect peak to our most recent west coast tour. The space, sound, people with played with and met, all the aftermath….

Describe The Parlour Suite’s fashion style?
Inga:
I think that we all have a unique style interpretation, I prefer something more on the feminine meets edgy feel. Black, lace, metal detailing, clean lines, and comfortable. We don’t really try too hard to blend in together, but it just kind of naturally happens.

Joel:
Equal parts The Breakfast Club and Blondie.

Check out how Blair describes her style along with a few of her favorite things in our Q&A and be sure to visit Love, Blair for more of Blair’s signature style.

If you could explain your style in one word or phrase what would it be?
“Urban Minimalist” meets “Eclectic Hipster”

Who’s style inspires you?
It depends on the day. Today it’s the Olsen twins. “Full House” aside, those girls make dressing chic look effortless.

What song do you currently have on repeat?
“Myth” by Beach House. Their entire “Bloom” album is on my summer playlist. It’s ah-mazing.

What’s on your summer reading list?
Books on marketing, business, and the like. I’m one of the nerdiest girls you’ll ever meet.

Where is your favorite summer destination?
Cinque Terre, Italy. Two summers ago my friend and I backpacked through Europe. In Cinque Terre we kayaked on the Mediterranean, ate gelato for all three meals and stayed in a B&B overlooking the sea. Pretty much a wanderlust’s dream!

My Minnetonka must-have item is…
My new Tramper Ankle Hi Boots! I can’t stop wearing them!
