What is your Minnetonka story?
Here at Birkenstock Feet First, our Minnetonka story started about two years ago.  We received our first shipment of Minnetonka Moccasins and were so excited when we first opened the boxes and added them to our family of shoes here at Birkenstock!

Our customers came in and spotted our Minnetonka display immediately and began to reminisce back to their childhood telling us how they, or their family members, used to wear Minnetonka mocs!  They are so happy that we carry the same shoes from their past, that they purchase a pair for themselves and a pair for their children so that the Minnetonka memories may be passed down to the next generation!

What is the most popular Minnetonka style at Birkenstock Feet First?
Our most popular style is the Kilty Suede Moc!  Women and girls of all ages love this soft moccasin with a rubber sole.

What is your favorite pair of Minnetonka mocs, boots or slippers?
My favorite Minnetonka style is the Classic Fringe Boot.  I am now a grandmother and these have been my favorite style since the 7th grade!

How do you like to style your Minnetonka mocs?
Minnetonka mocs are great! They can be paired with jeans, shorts and skirts.  Keeping it trendy and fashionable is what Minnetonka mocs are known for!

What are a few “must see” destinations when visiting North Carolina?
In Greensboro there are many great parks for hiking and bike riding.  One of the parks in particular, Guilford Courthouse National Park, has historical relevance in the Revolutionary War. A battle was fought between Cornwallis and Nathaniel Greene, hence the name of our great city.

In Winston-Salem there is a wonderful Downtown Art District featuring all types of art galleries, shops and museums. Also Historical Old Salem has acres of historical buildings, gardens and shops that are fun to visit.

When in Charlotte visit Panther Stadium for a great day of tailgating and football.  For NASCAR fans there is the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Lowes Motor Speedway to visit!

Minnetonka Music Notes: Sleep Study

Minneapolis band Sleep Study

Meet Sleep Study the Minneapolis band behind “Flower Girl,” the soundtrack to Minnetonka’s Spring Video Lookbook Spring Awakening.  Learn more about the band in our Q&A with Sleep Study’s Ryan Paul Plewacki and be sure to enter to win a copy of their debut album Nothing Can Destroy featuring “Flower Girl.”

Tell us how Sleep Study came to be.
Everyone in the band has a different perspective on it, here is my recollection: The band is essentially the brainchild of keyboardist Cory Eischen and myself.  He and I fell into a habit of meeting in his studio and working on songs late into the night. These songs had no purpose nor were they earmarked for any specific project. We were just writing for the fun of it.

At the same time I was working on a record in Boston with Al Kooper and had a wild idea to gather some local Minneapolis guys to track on it. After a few rehearsals, we dug what was happening. The project with Kooper fell through, so instead, we gave our group a name, bought a van, and started working on our debut record.

Which artists or bands inspire you musically?
You know, I’m a sponge. I soak up all music that is around me. I think most critics have noted that what drives most of my writing draws from the “British Invasion” bands, namely The Beatles. But I also really dig all of the bands from that era, groups like The Kinks, Spencer Davis, Troggs, Yardbirds, Zombies, Hollies, Peter and Gordon, Chad and Jeremy, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. I’ve been obsessed with that stuff since I was a kid. I’ve also always been drawn to a lot of the new wave groups and specifically bands like Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode. Duran Duran, and The Smiths. Then there was the incredible punk music that grabbed me like X-ray Spex and Essential Logic. Somewhere in all of that I found Robyn Hitchcock and I’m not certain I’ve been the same since.

What’s been your most memorable performance so far?
We’ve had some incredible times on the road, but there’s always something special about being back in Minneapolis. And for us, that venue is the 7th Street Entry. We had our record release show there and filled the bill with bands we love.

Favorite Minneapolis hangout?
I live in Longfellow and it’s just a quick jump over to Birchwood Café. It’s kind of like my office. We schedule all of our meetings there and my wife and I barely need an excuse to not make dinner and let them cook for us.

What’s your Minnetonka story?
I bought my first pair of Minnetonka boots about a year and a half ago. I tried them on in front of the stand up mirror at one of my favorite shops and couldn’t stop staring at them…to this day they are still my favorite pair of shoes. I now own 6 different pairs and wear them almost everyday. They are so comfortable, effortless and add a lot of interest to any outfit. You can make them bohemian with neutral colors and flowy dresses or eclectic with leather and rich colors. My closet will always be stocked with Minnetonkas.

If you could explain your style in one word or phrase what would it be?
My style is constantly evolving. I love mixing pieces from all different types of styles to create something eclectic and full of pieces that I love! Some days I feel very free-spirited and wear tons of layers and other days I like to add in touches of edge. Most importantly, I enjoy being comfortable!

Whose style inspires you?
I’m always inspired by some of my favorite bloggers; Kelli, Katie and Bonnie. I love how they mix pieces and create unique outfits. They are amazing at expressing themselves and always staying true to who they are. I’m also inspired by my style board on Pinterest. I love pinning inspiring looks and figuring out ways to make them my own.

What’s your favorite trend this season?
I’m very much a layers type of girl. Even during the hot months I love figuring out ways to add dimension to my outfits with lots of layers! I’m also a sucker for a touch of sparkle, I hardly wear any but my inner fashionista would love to rock a sequin fit and flair dress everyday.

What song do you currently have on repeat?
I can’t stop listening to Mumford & Sons new album, Babel. My husband and I love playing their music on road trips or blaring them in our home while we’re cleaning. One day when we start a family we plan on making listening through all of the Mumford & Sons songs a requirement for becoming an official Wallace.

What’s your favorite city and why?
My business partner and I got a chance to visit Chicago a year ago and we fell in love. The city was beautiful, at the time, the weather was perfect and the Chicago mix popcorn….delicious!!! I can’t wait to go back.

My Minnetonka must-have item is…the 3-layer fringe boot in brown. LOVE these boots.

DIY Project: Embellished Moccasins

Minnetonka DIY: Embellished Mocs created by Coxal Collaborative

We can’t wait to try this adorable DIY project this weekend created by Coxal Collaborative! Check out the tutorial below on how to embellish your mocs and visit Coxal Collaborative for more cute and creative DIY ideas.

- Moccasins
– Ribbon/ Trim of your choice
– Fabric & leather adhesive
– Scissors

1. Take ribbon and place it around the area you want to attach it to in order to measure out how much you’ll need – allow about 1 inch extra in order to fold ends in to keep them from fraying, and cut the amount of ribbon you need. Do this on both shoes.

2. Place ribbon on area you’re attaching it to once more, and mark where you will be able to fold each end in – it is easier to fold each end & glue it down prior to attaching it to the shoes.

3. Once you’ve marked both sides of each piece of ribbon/ trim, place a line of glue along the “wrong side” of each end of the ribbons (the shorter end, where you cut) and fold it along the mark you made, press down to make sure it bonds.

4. On the “wrong side” of each piece, draw a line of glue along the middle, down the length of the ribbon.

5. Match this line of glue to the top edge of the moccasin, in small increments to ensure you are placing the ribbon correctly (this glue dries fairly quickly and is very strong, so mistakes are a little tougher to correct).

6. Once you have the ribbon attached along the top of the moccasin, begin securing the outside and the inside lengths of ribbon by flipping them up to show the “wrong side”, dabbing with glue, and pressing them down to bond them with the moccasin.

7. Once you’ve done this to both shoes, you’re done!
