Handcrafted for the Holidays: DIY Bow Ties

Handcrafted for the Holidays

DIY Bow Ties created by Liz from Cotton & Curls

Every year growing up my mother would make me and my brothers something very over the top Christmas-y for all of the festivities. For me this would involve puffy plaid velvet dresses with elaborate lace collars, and for my brothers lots of Christmas plaid bow ties and little 3-piece suits with cumber belts.

I do appreciate a very well put together outfit and in plaid no less, but for me to carry on this tradition I simply made myself a plaid pair of pants and my boys a couple of very simple and easy plaid velcro bow ties. I can’t say that I won’t eventually go more and more over the top, but for now this is what I will do!

These simple bow ties are perfect paired with something dressed up or down. Now all I need to do is make one for my husband. Happy holidays and happy bow tie making!

Supplies:
fat quarter of fabric (I just used scraps)
interfacing (optional) if you are using a thinner fabric
3″ of 1/2″ – 1″ wide velcro
sewing machine
thread
scissors
pins
iron

Instructions:

1. Measure and cut out the bow tie material, it is 4″ to 6″ and add a half inch of seam allowance (the bigger this is the bigger the width of the bow in the end). The length will be 7″ to 8″ and add a half inch seam allowance (the bigger this is the wider it will be). I did 4.5″ X 7.5″ (this included seam allowance) and it was perfect!

2. Fold the material in half so it looks skinny and long (hot dog style) and sew up the side a quarter inch.

3. Iron the seam into the center.

4. Fold again the other direction (hamburger style), and sew up the side.

5. Turn right side out and iron that new seam into the center.

6. Crease the center of the bow with your fingers, making the material look like a bow tie.

7. Stitch the bow tie crease into place.

8. Measure and cut out the middle piece of the bowtie. I did 1.5″ X 6″.

9. Fold it in half so the two small ends are touching (hamburger style). we are folding it twice to make it a little thicker, so we don’t need any interfacing.

10. Fold again, but the other direction this time (hot dog style). So there will be a fold at one of the ends. Sew up the long side.

11. Iron the new seam in the center.

12. Wrap the little piece around the center of the bow tie, measure where you will sew it. Leave a little tiny bit of slack because we are going to add the velcro tie in it.

13. Fold in half and sew where you marked.

14. Flip right side out and slide it onto the center of the bow tie, leaving the seam hidden in the back (last pic on right).

15. Measure the person’s neck you are making it for and cut out the piece for the velcro tie. I did 1.5″ X 12″ (for toddler size), but this will be longer (not wider) depending on the size of person’s neck. This is the only part that will be changed depending on the size of the person.

16. Fold in half so the longer ends are touching (hot dog style) and sew up the side.

17. Turn right side out, iron the seam to one of the sides to make it look seamless. Then top stitch both sides.

18. Fold the ends into a triangle shape and top stitch over it, make sure the ends are folded in on opposite sides of the tie (i.e. in order for the velcro to fit together properly, one end needs to be folded up over and the other down under)

19. Looks like this.

20. Sew 3″ of velcro on the ends covering the triangle you sewed. Make sure to test out the velcro’s positioning, so if you sewed the ends properly, the velcro should touch perfectly. I made sure that the end that would face the neck would be the soft part of the velcro.

21. Pull the center piece onto the tie and tack it down. in the center.

22. Pull the tie back in and reposition it in the center. Tack it down.

What’s your Minnetonka story?
For as long as I can remember I have been a fan. Minnetonka is a brand that has stood the test of time! As a family we own at least 10 pairs of Minnetonkas…and our collection is growing!

What inspired you to start Mom’s Best Network?
I have been involved in product design and development for the past 10 years within the children’s and baby industry through my own apparel and accessory brand.  Two years ago I had my fifth and final baby, at that point my life shifted I felt inspired to take a different course. With all the knowledge I had gained thus far as a mother to five children, as well as my product background, I really wanted to create something that would help and inspire others by connecting moms with moms, moms with brands, and encouraging mothers and women in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

I wanted to create a platform where I could help others by featuring inspiring content from inspiring women. With Mom’s Best we bring you the best in motherhood, lifestyle, business, fashion, design, and more.

Where do you find style inspiration for yourself (and your kids)?
I am inspired by classic and modern design and I love bright colors and patterns, but I still crave simplicity!  I’m not so much into the latest trends. Those get old real fast!
One thing I have learned is there are no set rules.  Don’t be afraid to combine the most unlikely of items because it just might look really good!

What are a few of your family’s favorite winter activities to do together?
Traditional Christmas tree cutting, ending with a hot dog roast and hot chocolate by the fire.  Sledding, going to the movies and making yummy treats…especially marshmallow popcorn with dots candy!

Today we are excited to welcome Signe, from the blog SigneRoo, as a guest contributor to the Minnetonka blog!

My name is Signe and I blog over at Signeroo.com.  I am so excited to be guest posting on Minnetonka today!  Even though I grew up in the South, I was born in Wisconsin and that Northern blood is flowing through my veins. Every year, we would travel up to the Wisconsin Dells and every year we would each get a new pair of Minnetonka moccasins. Which means my love for Minnetonka goes way back to teeny tiny moccasin feet.  So when Minnetonka reached out to me, I knew I wanted to do something a little different than the same old outfit photos.  And this time, I wanted my husband Chad to be involved.  (He’s normally the man behind the camera, and I wanted him to join me in this one!)

When brainstorming this collaboration, I decided I really wanted to embody what it is about Minnetonka that make moccasins a desired staple in every closet.  Chad and I live in the cutest little town in Texas, and we just recently purchased an old historic home right off the downtown square.  On the weekends, we enjoy strolling downtown for a little date at the bookstore, one of our favorite restaurants, or a little antique shopping. (Of course, there is always a trip to the candy store tucked away in there.)  So when I got down to it, I really wanted to capture a day in the life of Chad and I.

To me, Minnetonka moccasins are the perfect “every day, every way” shoe. They can literally be worn anywhere.  On a quick stroll through the lovely Fall foliage, on a date downtown, lounging around the house, work, play…you name it!  That’s what I love so much about them!  So, I hope you enjoy watching this video of  “A Date with Minnetonka” as much as we did creating it!

What’s your Minnetonka story?
I think I bought my first pair over 7 years ago when I started college. I had no idea when I bought them that they were Minnetonka. Then a few years later I found out about the brand and really wanted a pair of the fringe boots, only to realize I already had some! I still wear them all the time and have since bought a couple more pairs because they are super cute and so comfy.

If you could explain your style in one word or phrase what would it be?
Bohemian with an urban, edgy twist.

Whose style inspires you?
The hippies of the late 60s and early 70s and my two favorite fashion blogger sisters Dylana and Natalie Suarez. It’s insane the way they mix prints and textures so effortlessly. I find inspiration of course from style blogs and I love browsing the site WhoWhatWear.com for outfit ideas. I’m also inspired by the music scene in Austin. I go to a lot of festivals and shows in town. I pretty much dress in festival attire year round.

What’s your favorite trend this season?
Over the knee boots. They work for short people too, I promise!

What song do you currently have on repeat?
“The John Wayne” by Little Green Cars

What’s your favorite city and why?
Paris because of the fashion, the culture and the people. Everyone just seems to be totally in love with life there. It’s contagious.

My Minnetonka must-have item is…The Double Fringe Side Zip Boot. Really if you give me anything with fringe and suede I’m happy!
