What’s your Minnetonka story?
I got my first pair of Minnetonka mocs when my family was on a cross country RV trip. We were camping in West Yellowstone and went shopping through all the little tourist shops and one of them had Minnetonka for sale. My mom had always told me how her Thunderbird mocs were her favorite shoes growing up, and I’d always wanted a pair because of that, so when I saw them I knew I had to get a pair. They instantly became my favorite shoes and I wore them nonstop until they were chewed to pieces by my ex-boyfriend’s mom’s Rottweilers (I’m sure they just thought they smelled like tasty leather dog treats!). It was especially sad because not only did I lose my favorite shoes, but he had broken up with me that week. Talk about adding insult to injury!
Thankfully, the next week as I was driving to my parent’s house I spotted a little shop on the side of the highway that had a sign out advertising moccasins. I decided to quickly pull over and see if they were Minnetonka’s and they were! So I got myself a brand new pair of Thunderbirds and have been wearing them ever since!
If you could explain your style in one word or phrase what would it be?
Vintage inspired, infused with an eclectic mix of modern styles.
Whose style inspires you? Where do you find your inspiration?
I’m most inspired by other bloggers. I’ve never been able to identify with the style I see in magazines, so when I discovered personal style bloggers I was excited to see normal girls like myself being creative in their own personal style. To me, magazines were always about selling trends and designer clothes, but bloggers were all about shopping according to your own budget and styling yourself in a way that inspires you and makes you feel good. I find that incredibly inspirational.
What’s your favorite thing about dressing for fall?
My favorite thing about fall dressing is just getting to wear boots and scarves and hats again, and being able to pull out all my favorite jackets. I actually just got an awesome cape, so I guess I’ll say that my favorite fall trend is capes. I love how they add an air of intrigue in a chic way. I always feel a bit like a character out of a fairy tale when I wear my cape.
What song do you currently have on repeat?
I’ve been listening to this mix nonstop lately. It has two of my favorite songs, Bang Bang by Nancy Sinatra, and Down in Mexico by The Coasters. So much awesome in one mix.
What’s your favorite city and why?
Lately I’ve been feeling a lot of love for my hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. Growing up there, it’s just normal. You’re just a kid living in a town like every other kid in other places. But having grown up and finding myself living in the Lower 48, I’m beginning to get a different perspective and I really appreciate how special Anchorage (and all of Alaska) is. The landscape alone is awe inspiring, but really there’s something about people who live there that is a bit different, which I think comes from this unspoken sense of “being in this together.” Since Alaska is so far away from the rest of the states, it’s inhabitants learn to lean on one another for support. Not to say that people in the Lower 48 don’t support one another (we see this happen all the time with stuff like the recent hurricane), but down here we can draw on all the people in the states around us for support and we’re much more visible to the media and one another. In Alaska that large support system isn’t there, so it’s much more of an internal sense of support, if that makes sense. Anchorage may not be the most chic or trendy city in the US, but it’s got something special that I have yet to find anywhere else.
