Discover new music to love. Go Back Roads & Backstage with us as we accompany a few of our favorite musicians on tour as they navigate the back roads of America and provide a backstage glimpse of life on the road.
Recently, we partnered with online music publication The Wild Honey Pie and had the chance to meet up with Vanessa Carlton at her home in Nashville before she embarks on a new tour this month. Read on to learn about her latest album, Liberman, her onstage style and her must-haves for life on the road.
Describe your on-stage and off-stage style.
On stage I like to look sort of shiny but simple. Not overly flashy. I love the ritual of doing my hair and makeup. It's important to my performance in a way cause I zone out. Off stage on the road isn't pretty. It's a uniform of jeans, boots a sweater and sunglasses if it's an early morning van call.
What’s been your most memorable performance to date?
Playing with the California Philharmonic.
What’s your favorite part about being on the road?
Meeting the audience...connecting with them.
What’s your favorite city to play?
Atlanta or Chicago.
What are a few must-haves when you’re on the road?
I need good lighting in the dressing room. I’m VERY into lighting. It's all about the vibes ya know? Doesn't have to be fancy. I also need to find a juice place as much as possible so I stay healthy. Plus...you know....wine.
