Inspiring handcrafted how-to’s for your home, life and well being. Our Made By Hand series features distinct DIYs made with a little love and a lot of creative spirit. Today's post comes from Lindsey Crafter.
Lindsey Crafter here! As a DIY-er and crafter, I’m always making messes and running out for props and supplies. I need shoes that are comfortable enough for being on my feet all day as well as being cute enough to wear to a shoot.
I’ve found a great way to dress up a working outfit is a bold color accent on a neutral shoe. I’ve made my Minnetonka boots my own by adding colorful tassel ties to the laces of my favorite Venice Booties! All it takes are a few materials and about 30 minutes.
What You’ll Need
12”x12” piece of leather or suede in your choice of color (should be no more than 1/16” thick)
Leather Craft Glue
Step 1 | Be sure your work surface is clean and place your leather so that the color is facing down and the raw leather is facing up. Trace four 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles on the back of the leather with a ruler and ballpoint pen -- one for each tassel. Ballpoint pens will allow you to easily mark precise cut lines on the back of your leather without much effort.
Step 2 | Draw a ½” margin horizontally from the top edge of each rectangle. This will be a cutting guide for your fringe.
Step 3 | Create the cut guides for your fringe by tracing vertical lines every ⅛” extending from the ½” margin line to the bottom edge of each rectangle. Marking these lines before cutting will ensure that your fringe is consistent in length and width, giving you a professional finish.
Step 4 | Cut out each 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangle and then cut along the vertical guides with sharp scissors to make fringe, stopping at the top margin line on each cut.
Step 5 | Trim about ½” off the plastic cord ends with sharp scissors so that the hard end doesn’t protrude out from the bottom of the finished tassel.
Step 6 | Place the trimmed cord end and a small dot of glue on the edge of the leather piece, so that the tip of the cord is aligned with the bottom of the ½” top margin. Fold the leather around the cord to begin tightly rolling the fringe into a tassel.
You won’t be able to remove or add the laces to your moccasins after attaching the tassels, so be sure your shoes are laced properly before beginning this step.
Step 7 | Apply a strip of glue along the top margin of the leather and tightly wrap the fringe piece around the cord. Be sure to keep the top edges flush and pull to keep the leather taut. Ensure the end is glued down sufficiently and wipe off any excess glue before it dries.
Step 8 | When you’ve finished wrapping your tassel hold the end of the fringe in place with your fingers for a minute until the glue is dry. After you’ve glued all the tassels to the laces allow the glue to cure overnight before wearing.
I love the highlighter yellow detail added to the Brown Venice Booties. Have fun playing with alternative color combinations to make your Minnetonka boots your own. These handcrafted tassels add maximum impact without much fuss. Thanks for letting me share this quick and easy embellishment. Be sure to check out Lindsey Crafter for more colorful DIY’s and crafts!
